BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Stress and anxiety are big forces in today’s world. Sports, hobbies and healthy eating can help. Another approach is a sound bath — using sounds to find relaxation and transformation.

Sounds can help the body. In ancient cultures, sound was used to promote healing. The Center for Sound Therapy in Boardman takes a more contemporary approach.

Maria and Calvin Wagner are sound therapists who play bowls, gongs, bells and many instruments to produce the sounds. Those work with the mechanics of the body.

“What we’re doing is we’re using their ancient techniques in a modern-day world with the science that backs behind what sound therapy could do,” said Maria Wagner. “So we’re using the sound, the frequencies and the vibrations, to induce a state of meditation. And we know that the stress levels in a person’s body goes down during meditation.”

Listeners can sit or lay down to soak in the sounds. Sessions take about an hour.

There can be many benefits to sound as therapy, including reducing stress, anxiety or inflammation.

“If your body has manifested a symptom of something, pain, if you’re not sleeping, those are all little signs that you can benefit from sound as therapy,” Wagner said.

There’s a lot of tones and sounds. Deeper tones can help your mood. Lighter vibrations can give you a burst of energy.

This modern approach is gaining popularity, and helping people find a better state.

“When you’re listening, that helps you to come back into the centeredness and the quietness within yourself, so you can begin to process where you are feeling stressed, what’s been going on, and how life has been making you feel and the intention is by the end of the session we want to help you let some of that go,” Wagner said.

It’s so relaxing that some people fall asleep. The average person goes once a month, but you can schedule as often as you like.

The Center for Sound Therapy will even schedule a private or corporate event. The business is located at 6229 Market St. in Boardman and can be reached online or by phone at 330-779-1669.
